Scholarships, Bursaries and Assisted PlacesScholarshipsThere are thousands of scholarships available throughout the UK. Most Independent Schools award scholarships to students with high academic potential or with exceptional talents in drama, art, music or even sports. These are awarded by some schools at age 11, by others at age 13 or for sixth form entry, and in some schools scholarships are specifically available for sixth form entry from state sector schools. Entry by scholarship is always subject to entry examination results. BursariesBursaries are grants made by schools to parents who cannot afford to pay full fees and are prepared to undergo a means test of family income. They are also sometimes agreed with the parents of students already at the school who experience financial problems. The children of the Clergy and Services personnel qualify for bursaries from a particularly large number of schools, as do children of former pupils, single parent families or orphans. There are some available for pupils who excel at sport. Please Note: As well as getting written information from the school about scholarships and bursaries, it is advisable to talk directly to the Head about their availability. |
